Overview

Gasherbrum IV, which was also named “K3”, is the fourth highest peak in the Gasherbrum massif standing at a height of 7,925 meters. It is situated on the eastern edge of the Gasherbrum massif, bordering the Baltoro Glacier to the west and Abruzzi Glacier to the south. The nickname K3 was given to it because of its close proximity to K2, the world’s second-highest mountain. The other name given to Gasherbrum IV is, "Shining Wall," due to its southeast Face which is the most prominent of all and is the most challenging. No successful summit of Gasherbrum IV was achieved until 1958, but then the first summit was made by a Japanese expedition which was led by Kiichi Mori. Gasherbrum IV remains a wanted and dream peak for mountaineers seeking a high-altitude technical challenge. However, because of its inherent dangers, it sees fewer attempts compared to other Gasherbrums. The mountain offers several climbing routes among which the most famous is the southeast face, also known as the "Shining Wall". This route requires technical climbing skills and experience with big wall climbing techniques. Other routes include the Southwest Face, Abruzzi Spur, and the Normal Route. Climbers attempting Gasherbrum IV may face extreme weather conditions, including high winds, sub-zero temperatures, altitude sickness and potential avalanches. Proper acclimatization and a well-equipped team are the most important for survival. Climbing expeditions require meticulous planning, logistics support, and a high level of experience to navigate the mountain's complexities.
