Overview

Gasherbrum II is the 13th highest mountain in the world, located in the Karakoram Range, on the border between Pakistan and China. Its number comes after Gasherbrum-I which is the 11th highest mountain. The height of Gasherbrum-II is 8,035 meters above sea level. Both Gasherbrum I and Gasherbrum II are part of the Gasherbrum Massif, which includes several other peaks as well. Gasherbrum II was first successfully climbed on July 8, 1956, by an Austrian team which included Fritz Moravec, Joseph Larch, and Hans Willenpart. The team was led by Fritz Moravec. The success of the Austrian team on Gasherbrum II contributed to the attraction of the Gasherbrum Massif, attracting mountaineers from the whole world to test their mountaineering skills and persistence against these peaks and other towering peaks of the Karakoram. The most commonly used route on Gasherbrum II is the South Ridge. Climbers establish base camp on the Godwin-Austen Glacier and ascend to Camps I, II, and III before making the final push to the summit. The other route is the west Face of Gasherbrum II which is a more challenging and less common route. Climbers approach from the Baltoro Glacier to this route. Climbing Gasherbrum II is still highly challenging, but it is considered somewhat less technical than Gasherbrum I. The mountain attracts climbers from around the world, and its ascent involves ice and snow climbing. These mountains are renowned for their stunning beauty and are popular among mountaineers seeking to climb high-altitude peaks. The region is known for its harsh weather conditions and complex terrain, adding to the difficulty of ascending these peaks.
